I put the book down, and I was like… meh. I really wasn’t going to write a blog post. In his long-awaited return, John Green, the acclaimed, award-winning author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars, shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship.ġ. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.Īza is trying. Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. Genres: Young Adult Fiction, Mental Illness “The thing about a spiral is, if you follow it inward, it never actually ends. Especially with homophobes running the campus, including Gordo (aka Luis's estranged father). Though it turns out a conservative school in the '80s isn't the safest place to be a gay kid. When a hit on the head knocks him back in time to 1985 and he meets the doomed young Chaz himself, Luis concocts a new plan-he's going to give this guy his first real kiss. But that was ages ago, when Luis's parents were in high school it would never happen today, right? All Luis Gonzalez wants is to go to prom with his boyfriend, something his "progressive" high school still doesn't allow. From lauded writer David Valdes, a sharp and funny YA novel that's Back to the Future with a twist, as a gay teen travels back to his parents' era to save a closeted classmate's life. The story takes us to a time in the early nineteenth century on the banks of the Hawkesbury River, north of Sydney, where English settlers come face to face with the Indigenous Darug people who have long called the region home. The Secret River is a gripping portrait of the struggle and conflict of dispossession in early colonial Australia. It is an international best-seller and has been adapted for the stage and made into a television mini-series that was broadcast on the ABC in 2015. The Secret River, published in 2005, earned Grenville many literary awards including the Commonwealth Prize for Literature and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Miles Franklin Award. Kate Grenville is an Australian author whose popular titles include The Lieutenant, One Life: My Mother’s Story, Sarah Thornhill, and The Secret River – these books by Kate Grenville are now available to listen to as audiobooks. Considering that I have over 2,000 hard copy books and little room, I’ve long since switched to the e-reader world to save space, but all Kinsella’s books decorate my shelves in brand new hardcover glory. When I saw Shopaholic to the Stars up for pre-order, I pounced and did the impossible: I bought the hardcover new version. I forgot about the series, only recently re-discovering Kinsella through her new novel, the inspired laugh-out-loud Wedding Night, and checking out her other stand-alone fiction novels (namely Twenties Girl and I’ve Got Your Number) from my library. Mini Shopaholic left me enervated and disappointed. Becky was transitioned from a life-like comically endearing figure to a scatter-brained, childish facsimile of her glory days. Our quirky, spend-aholic, good-as-gold, lovable character has been on the fritz in the last several books, especially Mini Shopaholic. Sophia, Kinsella, queen of chick-lit drama merged with sidesplitting comedy and author of the ever popular (and movie-ized Shopaholic series) hasn’t penned another adventure with Becky Brandon (nee Bloomwood) since late 2010. Shopaholic Goes to Hollywood to Jump the Shark Pratt's contemplative and somewhat static form of storytelling is perhaps unfitting for an animated film, since animation has a different set of dynamics than comics. Regarding this, one could even say that the faithfulness of the adaptation is a limiting factor. The drawing style is also truthful to Pratt, and the animation is as good as it can be without a Disney budget. Animated features cost more than comics, so they also need bigger audiences, and the film-makers must've been tempted to tighten the pace and cut some of the historical references. This must've been somewhat risky, since the story isn't exactly easy to follow. The plot was most faithful to the original graphic novel, the dialogue being used almost verbatim. Being a big fan of Hugo Pratt's comic, I was pleased with this animated adaptation of Corto Maltese. In his elegant painted tissue-paper collages, Carle innovatively balances pastel hues with shocks of brilliant color, creating an appealing seascape that succeeds swimmingly. Yet readers spy all of these hidden critters when they lift acetate pages, adding a delightful dimension to this first-rate fish tale, capped by a winsome, child-confidence-building finale. Seahorse's encounters, he unknowingly swims by other sea creatures, cleverly camouflaged behind curtains of seaweed, a coral reef and a rock. She then lays her eggs into a pouch in the belly of her mate, who earnestly announces, "I'll take good care of our eggs. The decision met some controversy, but Morales proved to be a successful character, one prompting a rebranding of the series as Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man. One popular example is the long-running Ultimate Spider-Man, where Peter Parker was killed by Green Goblin replaced by Miles Morales, a half-Hispanic half-African American teenager. The Ultimate Marvel Comics line may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but when handled correctly it’s produced some of the best superhero books on the market. Ultimate Spider-Man‘s Brian Michael Bendis thinks heroes like Miles Morales are true-to-life, considering “there are very few people in the world who look like Captain America”. Soon after that, he started to receive orders for mushrooms from customers who were looking to buy drugs online, and more dealers appeared with different types of drugs for sale. The founder used the screen name Altoid and left comments on a couple of forums about the website. It didn’t have much publicity, but it quickly became popular. The Silk Road was launched in January 2011. The first product he sold were psychedelic mushrooms, which he grew in his own home. He built the site mostly by himself and taught himself programming languages as needed. The Silk Road founder was not keen on revealing his plans. In order to do this, he would need programming code for his site that used Tor and bitcoins so that people couldn’t trace transactions on his website. He also wanted to create an anonymous marketplace where people could buy and sell anything. Ross Ulbricht was a libertarian who believed in the legalization of drugs. In order to bring down Ross’s business and close down the Silk Road, law enforcement officers from four different agencies had a huge task ahead of them. Ross believed that this was a way for people to freely buy and sell what they wanted without being subjected to laws he didn’t agree with. The website allowed users to sell illegal drugs anonymously and without government interference. Ross Ulbricht worked out of his apartment in Austin, Texas to create an online drug marketplace called the Silk Road. 1-Page Summary of American Kingpin “The Amazon of Drugs” And I haven’t finished a series in a while, I forgot how good it feels.
